Food allergies are often seen in combination with asthma or eczema, which appear to run in families. One family member may have asthma while another has eczema and a third person has food allergies.

Food allergies are often diagnosed based on your own observations of reactions to food or drink. It is a good idea to keep a diary of your symptoms, when they occur, and what you have eaten.

Allergens commonly associated with this type of reaction are peanuts, nuts, milk, egg, and seafood. Allergies to airborne substances, such as allergic asthma and hay fever, may develop as food allergies subside. Allergies often trigger asthma, and cigarette smoke aggravates the condition.
